Working 35+ hours a week with kids underfoot (here's my actual schedule)

Hi there! How's your week treating you?

This Week's Reflection:
"When the Kids Are Asleep" Productivity

I used to think I'd get all my deep work done during nap time and after bedtime. But as my kids grow and as schedules change reality hit: some days there are no naps and by 8 PM my brain feels like mashed potatoes.

If I have to work 35+ hours and do it while the kids are home, I can't rely on stolen moments. I need an actual schedule that works with my reality, and has some flexibility built in.

So I mapped out my entire week, kids and all. Now we have a schedule that actually works because it assumes the chaos instead of fighting it.

Key things that make our schedule work:

  • Batch the work - I can't work 8 hours straight, so I break my workday into 1-2 hour batches. Giving me enough time to focus but breaks for pickup windows and sports.
  • Embrace "good enough" - Some meetings have to get done with kids present, and that's okay.
  • Protect the early hours - 5-7 AM is mine, no exceptions.
  • Plan for interruptions - Every work block has buffer time built in
  • Outsource the guilt - Working while being present isn't selfish, it's stewardship. This schedule gives me the time I need to provide for my family while also making sure we have quality family time.

Scheduling family time to align with my spouse is the biggest secret to making this work. When it's on the calendar, we are fully present. When it's work time, the kids know mom is working.

Remember that my schedule is flexible because of the job I chose and there were sacrifices that happened with that. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is build a schedule that honors both. I hope this gives you some idea on how to make it work without burning out 🫶
